Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Description
Treppchen is named after the stone staircase that was built into the vineyard many years ago for the farmers to work it. It is a 36 ha vineyard most of which has been replanted, excluding parcels owned by Meulenhof and J.J. Christoffel Erben. The red slate contains a high level of iron translating into very mineral expressive wines.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
From the "Buslay" plot with 80- to 90-year-old vines and fermented 100% in casks, the 2020 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese offers a clear and finely slatey nose with crystalline and citric flint-stone aromas that give a serious mineral background. On the palate, this is a sweet yet also vital and piquant, mineral Riesling with remarkable, crystalline acidity that dominates and structures the wine, which finishes with lush fruit and stimulating salinity, whereas the acidity remains a prominent part. This is a wine that needs to be aged for about a decade to be best received.
