Peter Jakob Kuhn Description
Situated in the historic Rheingau on the right banks of the river Rhine, the Kühn Estate has been a cornerstone of German wine-making for roughly 230 years and has been passed down through 11 generations. Having grown into a 20 hectare estate, Peter Bernhard along with his wife Viktoria, his parents Peter Jakob and Angela, as well as his sister Sandra continue to both preserve the established traditions of their ancestors and to pursue modern viticultural techniques. In 2004 they made the decision to achieve a certification as organic and biodynamic winery. The belief and expectation of quality wine manifests itself in their memberships in the VDP (Prädikat Wine Estates), Demeter, and “La Renaissance des Appellations”. The result is a collection of exquisite and well-defined rieslings.
For this riesling, All grapes selected from parcels on the Kuhn estate, ranging from plots close to the Rhine and those higher slate soil areas in the Taunus Mountains. Cultivation techniques follow biodynamic principles. Whole clusters hand-picked & slow pressed for several hours. Fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel and large oak barrels on the complete lees until April.
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
Entirely sourced from their own grapes, Kühn's 2018 Riesling Trocken Jacobus displays a beautiful white-golden color and perfectly ripe and refined fruit with discreet but lovely coolish and flinty notes. The palate is crystalline, salty and piquant and reflects the quartzite soils of the Rheingau perfectly. Great elegance and beautifully ripe and refined Riesling fruit lead to a stimulating and perfectly balanced finish. Tasted in May 2019.
When it comes to the finest dry Rieslings from Germany, Peter Jakob Kühn is one of the first names to mention, even though the biodynamic domain in Oestrich has been directed by his son, Peter Bernhard Kühn, for a few years. If there are any doubts, there has never been a better chance to learn about what is possible in Germany beyond reduction, sulfur and malic acidities.
2018 has been "an absolutely fantastic vintage for us," says Peter Bernhard. "The berries tasted unbelievably good and had this specific gleam. Many barrels developed an absolutely unique character that forced us to leave them alone instead of blending them with other barrels."
