Saint Cosme Description
Louis Barruol believes this is an ideal wine for discovering the typicity of Grenache from the southern Rhône. The wine combines a broad array of varietal Grenache traits: softness, red fruit, and vibrancy with a dash of power, length, and structure. Aromas and flavors of cherries, strawberry compote, and gingerbread.
Tasting Notes: Ruby red in color with rich aromas of brandied cherry, gingerbread and strawberry compote. The St. Cosme Little James Basket Press Red has a medium-body, easy-drinking palate with a juicy, yet peppery finish.
James Suckling: 90 Points
Pure grenache and made as a solera that has been alive for twenty years with half of the new harvest being exchanged into the solera each year. The final blend is 50% solera wine and 50% wine of the new vintage. The richness is really something. Such deep-set grenache red and dark berries, as well as riper, raisiny notes. Long, smooth and deep. Drink now.
Wine Spectator: 88 Points
Friendly cherry and plum fruit is spiked with dried lavender and warm stone notes. Twinge of grip on the finish. Fun, bistro wine, slightly rustic. Drink now. 10,000 cases made, 3,600 cases imported. — JM
Wine Advocate: 87 Points
Louis Barruol has solved the problem of tracking which bottling a non-vintage wine comes from by adding a bottling date to the front label of his NV Vin de France Little James Basket Press. This particular sample was bottled in 2019. Grenache-based and aged in tank, it offers up scents of maraschino cherries, almond skin and dried herbs. Medium-bodied, succulent and juicy, it finishes well, with just enough silky tannin to give it substance. Drink it over the next couple of years.
Wine Enthusiast: 86 Points
Wild blackberry and black raspberry aromas are highlighted by peppery spice on the nose. Rich flavors of black fruits meld with sage, thyme and a tingling of white pepper on the palate. The tannins are lightly gritty and there is ample acidity for balance. Fiona Adams
