Bodegas Avancia Description
Bodegas Avancia lies snuggled in the slate dominant mountainsides of Valdeorras, high above the Sil River. Named for the extensive gold mining that the Romans conducted in this area, (Val-de-Oras roughly translates to Valley-of-Gold in Latin) Valdeorras is home to the finest terroir for growing two of Spain’s most important indigenous grapes – Godello and Mencía.
Jorge was the first broker to introduce Godello into the United States, and for many years, was the only merchant offering a wine made from this unique grape. Jorge always dreamed of having his own Godello project, and Bodegas Avancia is the result of this dream. Bodegas Avancia produces the finest Godello wines in all of Spain.
Organically Farmed.
Winemaking: Hand-harvested and stored in small baskets. 20% of the wine fermented with indigenous yeast in used French oak puncheons and demi-muids (500-600 L. barrels, respectively.) The rest of the wine is fermented in stainless steel.
Aging: Eight months sur lie in the fermentation vessel (20% French oak, 80% stainless steel) with battonage.
Comments: Cuvee de O Godello expresses the freshest expression of the Valdeorras’ unique slate soils and indigenous clones of Godello. Sur lie ageing and used large format barrel fermentation impart a weight and complexity to Cuvée de O that sets it apart from other young Godellos. Voted the best young white in Valdeorras by the D.O. tasting board in 2014.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
The entry-level white 2019 Cuveé de O Godello has an expressive nose of white pepper and herbs that makes me think of a Gruner Veltliner, very spicy and peppery. It's ripe and juicy at 14.31% alcohol and has good freshness, combining volume and balance. It's a blend of wines that matured in stainless steel and oak with the lees for nine months.
Vinous Media: 91 Points
Green-hued yellow-gold. Assertive aromas of fresh citrus and orchard fruits, along with hints of smoky lees, vanilla and melon in the background. Rich but impressively lively in the mouth, offering intense Anjou pear, white peach and Meyer lemon flavors underscored by a smoky mineral quality. Clings with strong tenacity on the penetrating finish, which leaves bitter citrus pith and floral notes behind.
Wine Spectator: 90 Points
A vibrant acidity cuts through the quince, tangerine and ginger flavors in this round and polished white, underscored by chive, spice and heather elements, followed by a long, mineral-laced finish.
Jeb Dunnuck: 90 Points
A much more fruity, simple wine compared to the old vine cuvée, the 2019 Avancia Cuvee De O Godello is nevertheless undeniably delicious as well as impeccably made. Notes of citrus, lime peel, flowers, and mint all give way to a medium-bodied, silky, elegant white that has good acidity and a clean, crisp finish. This puppy would just sing with tapas. Enjoy bottles over the coming 2-4 years.
