Old Forester Description
Old Forester bourbon introduced by George Garvin Brown on Whiskey Row at 322 W. Main St. America’s First Bottled Bourbon® was the first bourbon to be sold in sealed glass bottles to ensure quality, made according to Brown’s 1870 Original Batch process of batching barrels from three distilleries to create a consistent flavor profile. The firm was named J.T.S. Brown and Bro.
Old Forester was named for Dr. William Forrester, a contemporary and customer of George Garvin Brown when he was working as a pharmaceutical salesman. When Dr. Forrester retired, Brown dropped the second “r” in the name.
1920 Prohibition begins. Many distilleries are closed, but the company, now named Brown-Forman, applies for and receives a federal license to continue producing Old Forester for medicinal purposes.
1933 Prohibition is repealed. Old Forester production is increased. Today, Old Forester is the only bourbon continually distilled and marketed by the founding family before, during and after Prohibition.
1920 PROHIBITION STYLE
In crafting 1920, we were able to spend time thinking about the legacy of Owsley Brown I and what was an incredibly unique era in our country’s history – Prohibition. 1920 Prohibition Style is our toast to the innovative and enduring spirit of Old Forester.
This 115 proof expression is the third release in our Old Forester Whiskey Row series and celebrates the brand’s continued distillation during Prohibition. For 13 years, the production, transport and sale of alcohol was strictly prohibited. However, Old Forester was granted a permit to continue distilling on Louisville’s Whiskey Row. The 115 proof expression represents a barrel sample that company president Owsley Brown I would have batched at the beginning of Prohibition.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE: An intense medley of cherry preserves, drippy caramel, dark chocolate, thickened maple syrup and seasoned oak spiciness.
TASTE: Dark caramel coats layers of malt nuttiness and sweet graham cracker all warmed by green peppercorn and coriander spice brightened with a hint of cedar.
FINISH: Tart apple crispness gives way to a long smoky finish full of toasted marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker sweetness
Whisky Advocate: 91 Points
The perfect proof. Rich in color, aroma, and flavor. It begins with powerful caramel, baking spice, chocolate, cherries, cinnamon, and toffee. Then nuance and complexity. Honey, jalapeño, rosemary, crème brûlée, malt, and fruit, from the spicy citrus of grapefruit to prunes and dried apricots. Hard to believe this is over 100 proof, as you never sense the strength challenging you to find what’s next amidst the subtlety. Extremely long finish with cherry, cinnamon, and caramel. Value Pick.
