Bunnahabhain Description
Our beloved Bunnahabhain — which means ‘mouth of the river’ in Gaelic, as it stands at the mouth of the Margadale Spring on the shores of the Sound of Islay — first came into existence in 1883. However its origins can be traced back four years earlier when, in 1879, William Robertson of Robertson and Baxter Blending House, joined with the Greenlees Brothers to create the Islay Distillery Company. And so, with the distillery built on a site close to the Margadale River, in 1883 Bunnahabhain was borne.
In the early years, our distillery relied upon the sea trade. Armed only with a small village, a pier and lots of whisky making know-how, our forefathers received supplies by boat and sent adventuring seafarers back to the mainland along the Sound of Islay with casks of the ‘good stuff’. It’s this daring spirit and coastal living which has made Bunnahabhain what it is today, and which continues to play an important role in the production of the ever increasing range of Bunnahabhain Single Malts.
ABOUT THE 1997 PALO CORTADO CASK FINISH
After spending 19 years slowly mellowing by the sea in traditional oak whisky casks, this delectable Bunnahabhain was then finished for almost two more years in rare Palo Cortado sherry casks. The result is a tantalising dram, full of berries and cream and a surprising hint of nutmeg.
Befitting of Bunnahabhain’s individuality, is our Senior Blender’s choice of Sherry Cask for this latest Limited Release. Palo Cortado Sherry is shrouded in myth and mystery. Almost all casks of this rare sherry varietal are laid down as Fino or Amontilado sherries. A natural phenomenon which occurs during maturation, causes the liquid to oxidise and age as an Oloroso sherry instead. This inexplicable twist of fate, can only be identified by the best Cellar Masters, and only impacts 1-2% of all sherries, making these casks all the more special.
This exquisite Bunnahabhain was first distilled and matured in 1997. Just like the expert Cellar Masters of the ‘Sherry Triangle’ in Spain, our Distillery Manager and Senior Blender identify the most special whiskies for finishing in the most special casks. It is with this expertise that this Bunnahabhain Single Malt was transferred to these extraordinary Palo Cortado casks, resulting in a deliciously sweet and nutty dram.
Limited to 1644 bottles, this whisky is really something special.
