The estate follows the principles of an “integrated agriculture” in the vineyards. Fertilization: soil fertility is maintained mainly with organic fertilizers. Only in the case of obvious mineral deficiencies is a careful mineral fertilization carried out. Soil management: the soil is tilled between one vine and another in each row in order to control weeds, improve the soil structure, improve drainage and make the root system grow deeper. Spontaneous cover crops (grass) are left between the rows of vines and mowed in order to prevent soil erosion, provide input of organic matter and natural Nitrogen. Plant protection: the estate takes part in the 2078/92 EU regulation. This regulation aims to encourage low-environmental-impact methods and to improve the preservation of natural resources in rural areas through agricultural and environmental measures that vary greatly according to each area. It is a deep, brooding Barolo with notes of smoke, tar, licorice and dark fruit that gradually emerge from the glass. Like Scavino’s other 1996s, the Rocche is just starting to show tertiary nuances and ... more
