In 1990, after 14 years of producing and drinking Bordeaux style wines, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn decided that their maturing palates needed a change. It seemed that an addition of Pinot Noir to the Duckhorn flyway of wines was in order. Rather than rely on the market to satisfy their new passion for Pinot, they decided to undertake their own production of this Burgundian varietal. For six years we sourced fruit from the best-known growing regions in California, including Russian River Valley, Sonoma Mountain, Carneros, Hollister, and the Anderson Valley. Finally, in 1996, we purchased vineyard land in the Anderson Valley and began to focus our viticulture efforts at the Goldeneye winery in this exceptional growing region. The Goldeneye winery is located in the heart of Anderson Valley near the town of Philo. The valley is located within Mendocino County and runs northwest between the upper Russian River Valley and the Pacific Ocean. The proximity to the coast creates a growing region distinguished by low-lying morning fog that evolves into long, mildly cool days. This is late-ripening grape country with well-drained gravely soils that are ideal for planting Pinot Noir vineyards. Our Goldeneye Confluence Vineyard estate encompasses 85 total acres and is located on Highway 128 in the middle, more temperate part of the Anderson Valley. The vineyard is planted to approximately 50 acres of Pinot Noir. The vineyard is divided into 16 clonal rootstock blocks, uniquely chosen for this site. To the west, where the temperatures are cooler, we own three additional parcels that will be planted to a total of 85 vine acres. Our intent is to produce a number of unique bottlings, each reflecting the site specificity of the fruit and the vineyards. Visit the Goldeneye website.
