El Coto de Rioja

EL COTO DE RIOJA began making its wines in 1970 innovating in their vinification and ageing techniques, if you consider the general situation in Rioja at that time. We gave full priority to the creation of a new and personal style. From the beginning, we conceived a precise type of red wine, always to be aged in oak, in which the varietal caracter (primary aromas) should be put on even terms with the traditional oaky caracter (tertiary aromas) of Rioja wines. Moreover, we underlined the importance of an adequate bottle ageing in order to round up our wines before their release. With this type of wine in mind, we chose the grape variety Tempranillo to make our EL COTO CRIANZA, COTO DE IMAZ RESERVA and COTO DE IMAZ GRAN RESERVA, taking into account Tempranillo's excellent performance in oak cask ageing as well as the fact of being the most caracteristic of all indigenous Rioja grape varieties. As for the whites and rosés, we made up our minds for them to be fresh and open wines having a strong intensity of fruity and flowery aromas. That is why, for our EL COTO BLANCO, we chose the variety Viura, which stands out among the indigenous white grape varieties in Rioja for its very fines aromas. And last but not least, we decided for our EL COTO ROSADO to be made from Tempranillo and Black Grenache on equal proportions, so that we could bring together the latter's outstanding fruity aromas with the former's personality in order to create a truly Rioja rosé wine.
