The history of Brolio and that of the Ricasoli Barons have been linked since the 12th century when lands were given to them by the Republic of Florence. The actual year they were ceded was 1141 and for the next three hundred years or more this noble family's main occupation was fighting to defend Florence's territory from its greatest rival, Siena. Even after the two city states finally signed a peace treaty in 1478, the Ricasoli continued to play important military roles in the various foreign invasions of Chianti which continued well into the 16th century. However, in times of peace they involved themselves in Florentine politics and the upkeep of Brolio and their other properties. The Ricasoli name is inextricably associated with the selection of the Sangiovese vine as the chief one in the production of Chianti Classico wine. Bettino Ricasoli's influence was so strong and his family has produced fine wines for so many centuries that the name has become a synonym of Italian wine. Visit the Barone Ricasoli website.
