Andrew Will Klipsun Vineyard Merlot 2002
This forcefully constituted wine has a beguiling nose of licorice, coffee and fruit with floral accents. Thw wine has a rich sweet middle palate and unusually deep and eye appealing color. Perhaps the balance of the wine is the thing which most intrigues. On one hand, it seems to be a wine whose fruit and richness comes forward first and on the other, it is the sheer complexity of the nose which eludes words. Wine Enthusiast Is this the finest single-vineyard Merlot in the country? It certainly can stake a claim to that distinction, with its bright, dense, vibrant scents of berry and cherry, its muscular tannins and deeply concentrated fruit flavors enhanced with the dark notes of earth and iron from Klipsun soil and the relentless wind that toughens the grape skins. Decant this one early. It bursts forth on the palate unleashing opulent layers of black fruits and hints of freshly laid road tar. This deep, medium to full bodied wine reveals a long, ripe tannin-packed finish with a trace of alcoholic warmth detectable in its tail end. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2017.
