Almaviva Red Wine 2002

Deep red tinged with violet. The nose is filled with mineral notes, mesquite, nutmeg and profound aromas of black fruits, forest blackberries, and licorice root. The attack is deep and well sculpted while the evolution reveals tremendous balance. Bitter chocolate and licorice root fill the mouth, and a return of cassis, cherries and peach pips dominate the final. The vintage 2002 is remarkably dense and unctuous.

Wine Advocate The 2002 Almaviva is the finest produced to date by this joint venture between Vina Concha y Toro and the Baron Philippe de Rothschild. This Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine has a saturated, opaque, black ruby color as well as nose of sweet dark fruits, spices, and vanilla-laced smoky new oak. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied effort is broad, lush, and velvety-textured. Blackberries, cassis liqueur, and black cherries make up this deep, seamless wine’s flavor profile. It is concentrated, has outstanding balance, and a long, suave, ripe tannin-filled finish. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016. Score: 93. —Pierre Rovani, June 2005.

Wine Spectator A powerhouse, especially for the vintage, with black currant, coffee, bittersweet cocoa, loam and toast aromas and flavors that run along ripe tannins.
