If you’re a careful label-reader, you’ll see (in the fine print) that this wine is Beaujolais-Villages, which actually tells you quite a lot. The “Villages” appellation lies completely in the hilly, northern part of Beaujolais, and has superior vineyard locations with high mineral content soils and superior drainage. Perreon lies in the Villages appellation, and has pink granite soils; the Berard brothers vineyards have quite a few vines that are 100 years old or more. This wine is quite rich as Beaujolais goes, with big fruit and a lively, bright quality, and enough stuffing to ensure that it will age well for a few years-if you can resist drinking it now. It was fermented in tank, so there’s no oak to burden the purity of fruit. Although its aromatics will remind you of berries, it’s a dry wine that pairs well with roasted poultry, pork, and veal, as well as crossing over into Italian-inspired pastas with tomato sauces.
