For 300 years the Easter Elchies House, spiritual home of The Macallan, has stood on the banks of the Spey as a symbol of Scottish fortitude, a monument against the ravages of time. Dating from 1700, the Jacobean Manor is the same house that is depicted on The Macallan's packaging. Outside Easter Elchies House, a holly tree flourishes. Amazingly this tree dates back to the earliest days of the house.

Nose: Vanilla with hints of ginger, dried fruits, sherry sweetness and wood smoke

Palate: Deliciously smooth, with rich dried fruits and sherry, balanced
with wood smoke and spice

Finish: Sweet toffee, dried fruits, lingering wood smoke and spice

This 12 years old forms part of the core range and has been matured in ex-sherry casks. The color is golden amber and the nose is fragrant and sweet. There is plenty of dried fruit (think of raisin, sultana and orange peel) and caramel and these are backed up by some earthy spice (imagine cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger), toasted nuts (almonds especially) plus a hint of charred and slightly sulphuric wood smoke (this must be coming from the charred inside of the sherry casks). On the palate, this whisky is rich, full bodied and very soft and smooth. It is again sweet with the flavor profile led by the same abundance of dried fruits and caramel as shown on the nose. Other pleasant elements come through - honey, toffee, cereal grains, wood spice (cinnamon and nutmeg again) and a hint of cocoa powder. The combination is sublime. The finish begins sweetly (think of caramel and honey) but becomes drier, spicier (that ginger note again) and quite woody (especially slightly damp oak) towards the end.

Wine Enthusiast

The initial aroma is sweetish, winey and oaky; aeration allows the aroma to expand to include marzipan, treacle, molasses, honey, vanilla bean, cinnamon and cocoa butter. The palate entry is sweet, creamy and assertive; at midpalate the flavor becomes intensely nutty, buttery and bacon fat-like, with the beginnings of rancio. Remains one of Speyside’s standard-bearer 12 year olds.

Score: 90-95. April 01, 2008.
